Itinerary CT-2: Skye & Highlands in a classic Jaguar Mk 2, from GBP 549 per person for 3 nights

Tour the open roads of the highlands in a stylish, classic Jaguar Mk2 - famous as the preferred choice of both sides of the law in 1960s London, and latterly as the refined transport of the TV detective Inspector Morse. We have designed a comfortable route taking you north and west through the highlands as far as the Isle of Skye.

Day One

Collect your car around mid-day in Edinburgh and head north across the Forth Road Bridge into Perthshire with your first base, a highland lodge just north of Loch Tay, orginally buily to mark the geogrpahic centre of Scotland.

Your Hotel
Your charming hotel stands at the foot of a beautiful glen, in the heart of an historic arts & crafts village. Planned and built by renowned architect James McLaren in the 1880’s, this attractive hotel is a prime example of the local architecture. Inside, the hotel’s light and fresh décor exudes an air of relaxed conviviality; more welcome ‘country home’ than formal ‘country house’. Roaring log fires heat the rooms in winter, and the well-stocked library is the perfect place to read up on the fascinating local history at any time of the year. Dinner is served either in the stylish Arts and Crafts dining room or you may choose to eat in the cosy Ewe bar. The village is on your doorstep, and has historic connections dating back to Roman times. It is also home to an ancient Yew, which is at least two thousand years old, and almost definitely the oldest living tree in the UK, if not the whole of Europe.

Day Two

Today your route takes you north and west, through the heart of the highlands, through Glen Laggan and past the soaring mountains of Lochalsh before crossing the Skye Bridge, to your next base, a lochside hotel in the south of the island.

Your Hotel
Sheltered by a gently curving bay, your charming whitewashed hotel sits right on the seashore, enjoying expansive views over the Sound of Sleat to the wilderness of Knoydart. This is a Gaelic-speaking community and the bar is a convivial meeting place for the locals, who mix happily with hotel guests, often to the accompaniment of traditional music and Gaelic song in front of the roaring log fire. Twelve bedrooms (six in the Garden House) are decorated with pretty cotton and linen chintzes and there are four new suites in the recently restored stables, each enjoying superb views across the water to the lighthouse of Isle Ornsay. On the little harbour right beside the hotel is the headquarters of "The Gaelic Whiskies", where you can sample an excellent range of connoisseur brands before browsing in the nearby craft shop.

Day Three

Leave Skye by the short ferry to Mallaig. Pass the beautiful sandy beaches of Arisaig, the famous sight of Glenfinnan and through the majestic Glencoe valley before reaching your final highland base.

Your Hotel
Nestling in the heart of Rob Roy country amidst the beautiful lochs, forest and mountains of the Trossachs, this is primarily an award-winning restaurant, with the added benefit of overnight accommodation. The Baronial Dining Room, with its vaulted ceiling and magnificent fireplace, is the focal point of a restored seventeenth century farmhouse and a worthy setting for the superb Franco-Scottish cuisine, which has deservedly been awarded two AA rosettes and a Michelin ‘Bib Gourmand’. This area offers some of Scotland’s most breathtaking scenery and you can walk in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park from the hotel grounds, or in the surrounding hills which so inspired Sir Walter Scott.

Day Four

Today return to Edinburgh, passing Stirling Castle as you drive.
