Itinerary CT-7: Mini Cooper Scottish Tour from GBP 449 per person for 4nts

2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the Mini, so we have put together a celebratory trip from one side of Scotland to the other. Pick up a new Mini Cooper (convertible if you wish!) in Edinburgh, then head out to the glens for a night at a country inn. Tour on to the West Coast, to a hidden hotel famed for its seafood at the water's edge, then hop on a ferry across to the Isle of Mull and relax at an historic village inn.

Day One

Collect your Mini Cooper in Edinburgh and cross the Forth Road bridge then hit those great country roads.

Your first base is a renowned, 18th century drovers’ inn nestling in the heart of Glen Devon, one of the most beautiful glens in Perthshire. The historic atmosphere is balanced with welcoming, modern touches, and you’ll find an exceptional menu featuring the best Scottish produce, such as wild venison, hand-dived scallops and mouth-watering salmon. The cosy bar offers a wide selection of Scottish ales and single malt whiskies, including local Edradour, which proudly boasts that it is the smallest distillery in Scotland (visitors welcome nonetheless)!

Day Two

More great roads await as you cross the highlands, passing through the majestic Glencoe valley and on to reach the west coast, with your next hotel, set in a glorious lochside location.

Originally the home of Loch Linnhe’s Pier Master, this historic and award-winning restaurant, with its adjacent modern residence, really is a special place to contemplate the dramatic beauty of the west coast. The views are stunning and the once prolific steam traffic has given way to the blissful sound of silence. Mouthwatering langoustines and lobster are kept fresh off the end of the pier, before being served to you by candlelight in the cosy conviviality of one of Argyll’s finest restaurants. As you contemplate the sunset over the distant Morvern hills, you may be lucky enough to glimpse otters and seals.

Day Three

Your Mini adventure now takes you across Loch Linnhe and into the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula, the most westerly part of the British mainland, then by ferry across the sound to the Isle of Mull.

Here your base is a cosy 17th century droving inn, ideally situated between Tobermory and Calgary in the pretty estate village of Dervaig. Popular with the locals, who come from far and wide to soak up its convivial atmosphere, this is a place where visitors can enjoy traditional island hospitality, regular live music and wholesome highland fayre. Hearty meals and lighter bar snacks both feature fresh seafood and the finest Mull beef and venison. Accommodation is quietly situated away from the hustle and bustle of the bar and residents can escape to a private lounge/TV room with glorious views over the village and glen. This really is a delightful place to rub shoulders with the friendly folk of Mull.

Day Four - the Isle of Mull

A day to explore this island gem, which offers some stunning coastal roads, some fantastic sandy beaches – particularly at Calgary and Ardalanish - and wonderful wildlife. Lively Tobermory has a bustling vitality and is a great place to spend a few hours exploring. Brightly painted houses provide a colourful backdrop to the picture-postcard harbour and the ‘craic’ in waterfront bars rivals anything on the mainland. A world away from all this, but in reality just a short ferry crossing, tiny Iona is a deeply spiritual place, a historic Christian pilgrimage and yet another peaceful wildlife habitat with some glorious beaches.

Day Five

Return home, with your journey taking you past Loch Lomond and through the southern highlands.
