Fly to Islay from Glasgow
Just how easy is it to spend a couple of days relaxing in a lovely seafront hotel surrounded by heather-clad hills, deserted sandy beaches and numerous historical reminders of days gone by? The answer is very. Our Isle of Islay fly-drive includes return flights from Glasgow to Islay, car hire and a small hotel with award-winning restaurant by the sea. What could be simpler? And did we mention that Islay has more whisky distilleries than any other Scottish island?
Based in the heart of the charming village of Bowmore - adjacent to the harbour, your recently refurbished hotel boasts stunning views across Loch Indaal towards Jura. Your hotel is ideally situated to give you the opportunity to explore this charming Hebridean island. Bowmore Distillery is just a stone's throw away from the hotel itself - allowing you to sample the delights of this famous whisky. What's more, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the menu in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, incorporating seasonal dishes using locally sourced produce.
What to see and do
Once the ancestral seat of the Lords of the Isles, Islay is a fertile island of low heather-clad hills, attractive beaches, numerous historical sites and more whisky distilleries than any other Scottish island! (We can help and advise on arranging tours of any which are of interest.)
A haven for hill-walkers and bird-watchers, it is home to the huge Loch Gruinart bird sanctuary and its' vast numbers of migrating geese. In the island capital, Bowmore (where you will be based), you can visit the unusual Round Church (no corners for the devil to hide in!) or, if history is your thing, the Museum of Island Life in Port Charlotte is well worth a visit, as are the ruins of Finlaggan Castle, home of the Macdonald chiefs, and Kildalton Chapel with its early Christian cross. Easily accessible for day-trips are the neighbouring islands of Jura - rugged and truly remote - and pretty Colonsay (Wednesdays only), which boasts spectacular Kiloran Bay.
