Scottish Island Holidays: Mull & Iona

Itinerary WE-6: Eagle Island from £249pp for 3nts

The island of Mull has become known to many as "Eagle Island", due to its remarkable number of magnificent Golden Eagles - around 30 breeding ranges - and the even rarer White-tailed or Sea Eagles, rather quirkily known to bird watchers as 'flying barn doors' due to their phenomenal wingspan. Our unique short break is packed with opportunities to spend time watching these fabulous creatures in their natural environment.

Your trip begins with a full day "wildlife safari" with an experienced local wildlife guide, exploring the island and learning where and how to watch these wonderful birds of prey. You will also have the chance to spot otters and deer, and learn more about the culture and history of the atmospheric Isle of Mull.

On your second day you will have the unforgettable experience of visiting the world's only live and direct Sea Eagle viewing site, where visitors can watch the birds from a specially built hide, in a project run by RSPB Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Mull & Iona Community Trust. Visitors to the hide are strictly limited so we will pre-book this for you to guarantee your place. Here you can watch the progress of the well established pair - the female is named 'Frisa' and the male 'Skye' (aged 16 and 14) - who usually nest nearby.

Your Hotel

For this holiday we have selected a cosy 17th century droving inn ideally situated between Tobermory and Calgary in the pretty Victorian village of Dervaig. Popular with the locals, who come from far and wide to soak up its convivial atmosphere, this is a place where visitors can enjoy traditional island hospitality, regular live music and wholesome highland fayre. Hearty meals and lighter bar snacks both feature fresh seafood and the finest beef and venison. Accommodation (including family rooms) is quietly situated away from the hustle and bustle of the bar and residents can escape to a private lounge/TV room with glorious views over the village and glen. This really is a delightful place to rub shoulders with the friendly folk of Mull

From £249 per person, based on 2 people sharing for holidays in March & April 2008 and from £259 per person for May to July 2008 for 3 nights on a bed & breakfast basis.

Saturday ferries are subject to a £10 per person supplement.

You may also choose to stay in our selected hotel in Tobermory for an additional £10 per person per night.

This includes a full day's wildlife safari viewing both golden and white-tailed sea eagles, and a ticket to view the sea eagle nest from the RSPB hide. The price also includes return ferry travel to/from Mull for a car and two adult passengers.

Note for wildlife trips:
We of course cannot guarantee that you will see any of the wildlife described - these are wild animals and as such cannot be called to order, and no refund will be made if you are unlucky enough not to see any of the animals described, despite the very best efforts of the guides.
