Scottish Island Holidays: Orkney
Itinerary ork-3: Island Castle by air from £469 per person for 2 nights
A short break with a difference, combining two evocative elements - a Scottish castle on a (small) Scottish island.
All your dreams collide as the ferry nears the tiny island of Shapinsay, and you see the looming silhouette of turrets and towers awaiting you. Just minutes after stepping off the ferry, you will enter the grandeur of a baronial castle, complete with oak-panelling, exotic antiques, family heirlooms, and Victoriana at every turn. Yet for all its imposing grandeur, there is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. No-one stands on ceremony: the honesty bar in the library is just one example of the trustworthy rapport between guests and hosts.
Take an afternoon stroll around the castle’s grounds and visit the extensive walled-gardens for a sneak preview of the fresh fruit and vegetables that are likely to accompany your dinner at the impressive Laird’s table. You could easily grow accustomed to such a life of leisure and luxury.
Shapinsay itself offers peaceful coastal scenery and is rich with wildlife - there are some great seal-spotting places. For a break away from the madding crowd this is perfect.
From £469 to £519 per person, based on 2 adults sharing a twin or double room, for 2 nights between March and October 2008 on a dinner bed & breakfast basis.
This includes return flights from Glasgow or Edinburgh to Kirkwall (Orkney), taxi transfer to Kirkwall and ferry travel to/from Shapinsay.
